I’ve spent 12 years in finance and investment banking, and first became addicted to investing and researching the market as an investment associate at Morgan Stanley.
I started as a liquidity analyst, reporting on the firm’s fixed income, swaps, and foreign currency portfolios. Then in equity research, analyzing stocks and building models for institutional clients.
Over time I started to develop my own investment research methods and methodology for identifying opportunities.
I moved to Charleston, SC during the pandemic and switched over to wealth management as a private wealth advisor for Cetera, where I sat across the table from business owners, retirees, and high-net-worth families and managed their money and created financial plans for them and their families. And that's where it broke down for me.
Most advisor's pay depends on gathering assets and pushing proprietary funds (or insurance products) - not on whether your portfolio performs.
There are truly great advisors who provide real financial planning that people NEED. These financial planners are worth their weight in gold.
But I’ve found that most financial advisors you will come across have no understanding of investment strategy. They will simply put you in the model portfolio that they can defend in annual meetings.
The Earnout Investor is what I wish existed when I was advising clients.
Actual independent research with no conflicts of interest.
No products to sell. No commissions to earn. No funds to push.
Just honest analysis from someone who's done the work.
My newsletter provides insight on stocks, bonds, ETFs, precious metals, and commodities, with a focus on overall investment strategy, asset allocation, and updates on changing market conditions in the USA and across the world.
This is built to help anyone learn more about investment strategy, whether you are a passive index investor, a stock picker, or someone who just started making contributions to their 401k.
Every newsletter I write will have updates on the global market, analysis on the most important trends taking shape, and at least one big idea to consider.
All of my research is based on what I have learned in my career, from my time as a Morgan Stanley Investment Analyst, to managing money for clients as a Private Wealth Advisor, combined with the methods and philosophy that I use as an M&A Advisor, evaluating private businesses and their potential.
My Philosophy
I use fundamental analysis and base my investment philosophy on searching for Growth at a Reasonable Price (GARP) - as made famous by the ultra-successful investor Peter Lynch, who famously combined growth and value investing to create his investment strategy.
Simply put, I look for businesses with great earnings growth at reasonable valuations that have the potential to continue growing.
I also monitor different sectors and overall macro economy/global trends - including the business cycle and recession indicators, as part of my analysis and strategy.
I will be writing detailed analysis of some of the industries I know best.
Financials
Defense and Aerospace
Technology - AI, Cybersecurity, Cloud, Fintech
I will be digging into growth sectors I’ve researched that will shape our future one way or another
Healthcare - Biotech, Digital Health
Energy Transition - Renewables, EVs, Green Manufacturing
Advanced Industries - Robotics, Space, Advanced Manufacturing, Future Mobility
All driven by digital disruption, sustainability, and evolving demographics.
I will also be writing about opportunities across sectors, sizes, and regions across the globe, including anything I find compelling enough to take a hard look at.
Every newsletter will have a global update, with key events happening across the world.
My time at Morgan Stanley talking with interesting people across the globe, on different trading desks (New York, London, Paris, Mumbai, and São Paulo) has given me an endless interest in what is happening across the world, and how the overall trends driving our world forward can have a massive impact on investing.
My goal is to break down clearly what I think is happening and likely to happen, by dissecting markets and breaking down for you in plain English what I’ve found.
What I Won’t Do
Generic personal financial advice. Sales pitches for products I'm paid to recommend.
Breathless daily commentary chasing whatever moved 2% yesterday.
I am not a day trader and I never will be.
I’m not going to pitch you on a stock that is going to double in the next trading session, or put out “hot stock tips” unless there is some serious data to back them up.
You manage your own investments or you're about to start. You want to invest wisely and you take it seriously.
You think like a business owner about your investments, not like a passive saver.
Maybe you sold a business and you're figuring out what to do with the proceeds. Maybe you're a high-income professional building wealth on your own terms.
Maybe you just want a second opinion from someone who's actually done institutional research.
You may even be an advisor, working in finance, an undergrad, or a grad student trying to get a grasp on the rapidly changing world we live in so that you can serve yourself and others better.
If any of that sounds like you, subscribe.
It's free every Sunday. I'll let the work speak for itself.
My hope that, if nothing else, I can help inspire someone to catch “the bug” of investing and the fascination with our dynamic, complex world.
